Whether you’re an ecommerce or mail order company sending out large volumes of goods, we know that your customers are the important part of the process.

When your consumers place an order not only do they expect efficiency, but they also want to receive a good customer experience. They want their items to arrive in the best condition from when they were first shipped.

At TNT Post we know that ensuring your items are delivered without a glitch is vital, so we have created a short list of 10 tips that can help you to achieve this:

  1. Use a good strong packing material that will hold the weight of the item and is of good quality.
  2. Ensure you get the sizing of the package correct – if the packet you’re using is too small it could cause damage to your goods or burst from overloading, and if the packet is too big it can be squashed and misshapen.

  3. If there is more than one item, wrap each individually. Don’t put them together as it can cause rubbing, chipping and breakage.
  4. Using materials that cushion your items (bubble wrap, tissue, paper, polystyrene) can prevent your items from moving about in the box and protect them from damage.
  5. Always provide a return address on the parcel above the customer address – and always put the return address on a slip inside the packaging too.
  6. Address labels should be printed clearly with a full postal code – it looks more professional and is easier to read or scan.
  7. When sealing your packet, make sure that it is secure. This can be done by using strapping or strong tape. Consumers will not trust your goods if they have not been sealed properly.
  8. Check an item being sent does not contravene the mail service’s terms of use. Flammable liquids/solids or products hazardous to health or the environment are usually subject to restricted terms of service. Always check what your items contain before packing and sending.
  9. Weigh your items WITH the packaging to be used to get the correct postage cost. It will help you avoid wasting time and money recalculating postage costs.
  10. Not everything has to be in a box; a large padded envelope can normally handle smaller items (eg DVDs) up to 2Kg. Larger items up to 15Kg are usually fine in a box.

Before sending an item, pretend you are the customer and rate how your package looks. Does it look sensibly wrapped and strong, using good quality materials and is clearly addressed? If you can say yes to all those questions then chances are you’ve packed the item to a good standard.

As we mentioned before these tips will help make sure that your ecommerce goods reach your customers as effortlessly as possible ensuring customer satisfaction and retention.
