You might not realise it, but the charity sector isn’t in a great state right now. In fact, according to research published by the Charities Aid Foundation last year, one in six charities might have to cease their operations this year.
However, it needn’t all be doom and gloom. Here at TNT Post, we’re the leading providers of door drops for the charity sector, and if some research that we’ve recently carried out is anything to go by, then the people of Britain are still willing to give.
By analysing over 120,000 donations, we’ve been able to build a picture of the UK’s giving habits as a whole, as well as the most charitable areas in the country.
With regards to habits, if one thing has been made clear it’s that households have been cutting their monthly outgoings over the last three years, and as a result less and less are signing up to monthly direct debit plans to fund charities.
However, there has been an increase in the number of people giving one-off donations, and those donations in themselves are larger than before.
So where are the most charitable parts of the UK?
Well, despite the old stereotype that Scottish people are a little, erm, more careful with their money than those elsewhere, Central and Northern Scotland are the two most generous areas of the country, with London coming in third.
To narrow it down even further, Grampian, Strathyclyde, Tayside, Lothian, Fife and Inner London can lay claim to being the most charitable counties. At the opposite end of the scale, Gwent, West Glamorgan, Tyne and Wear, Cleveland, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire can lay claim to the dubious honour of being the least charitable places in the UK.
More good news for charities comes in the news that the return on investments from their door drops seems to have doubled. In the simplest terms, this means that charities are receiving more money from door drop donations than they are spending when sending them out, making it a positive investment.
