An E-commerce Christmas
Internet shopping is going from strength to strength with parcel volumes this Christmas peaking to the highest volumes ever recorded. The shift to online sales has been the success of the year for many retailers, while retail sales have remained stagnant, online sales have again grown dramatically. Consumers are becoming ever more connected to the web with tablet and smart phone ownership continuing to soar, the development of reliable and quick online payment methods have created a shopping experience they can enjoy on the move or from the comfort of their own sofas!
Online shopping throughout November saw daily parcel volumes increase by 77%, with a total of almost 12.5 million items processed. Last minute shopping meant sales remained high with volumes only slowing down after the 20th December. Volumes began a quick ascent after Christmas with a 69% increase in orders compared to 2011. Due to this demand e-retailers have had to respond and post Christmas many retailers such as Debenhams, House of Fraser, Sports Direct, and Asos were amongst those whose warehouse operations were working flat out every day after Christmas.
