It’s coming to that amorous time of year again where people all over the world will be expressing their feelings towards loved ones by exchanging cards and gifts.
But do the people of the 21st century really appreciate the concept of this day or is it just turning into another commercial event?
With the lead up to Valentine’s Day we thought we would indulge into the debate of whether handwritten cards are being out run by digital messages.
With the growth of smart phones, tablets, social networking, email, instant messaging, communication between people is streamed online more in today’s world than the old fashioned way of writing a letter or sending a card to a loved one.
Brits may be scrimping on costs of cards for Valentine’s Day in favour of the more cheaply form of sending a message via text, email or on social networking sites. In 2012, O2 mobile network reported that more than 11 million more texts were sent on Valentine’s Day compared to the rest of February. A total of 229,761,058 texts were sent!
Is this acceptable behaviour for Valentine’s Day?
It would seem that although the use of digital communication may be quicker and cheaper, not everyone is too impressed. Online beauty retailer Escentual.com surveyed 500 women leading up to Valentine’s Day, asking if they preferred a handwritten letter or card on this day, with a staggering 85% responding that receiving a card or letter would be their preferred choose.
So although the use of online communication is growing, perhaps for Valentine’s Day if you want to please the one that you love, don’t send them a text message or an email expressing your feelings. Take the time and effort to purchase a card and write out your feelings to your loved one. We are sure that it will be greatly received!
