Our transport department has seen some significant changes over the past 12 months after converting our fleet of HGV lorries with Prins Autogas dual-fuel LPG.

The conversion started back in January 2013, and by April all of the 80 strong fleet of Renault Premium 460 Euro 5 6x2 mid-lift tractor units where all converted.

We caught up with Dean Hulse, Transport Director at TNT Post, to find out how successful the conversion has been and what benefits the department has seen since starting this transformation.

Dean,  can you update us with how the HGV conversion with Prins Autogas UK is going?

The vehicle conversions are now complete which means we now have 80 vehicles operating with the Diesel/LPG blend system.

Can you tell us what has been the biggest benefits since starting the conversion?

The biggest benefit is the reduction in diesel usage; with diesel prices constantly increasing the introduction of this system helps to limit the use of diesel by replacing it with LPG; this results in a 75% diesel 25% LPG blend.

Last October, you reported that you would benefit from an annual net saving of 8-10% fuel costs – has this happened?

Although we didn’t operate the system fully until August onwards; results proved that we were indeed achieving the targeted reduction figures. With some further development work we hope to improve on this in 2014.

How have we impacted on the environment by converting?

For the 80 vehicles we have fitted with the system C02 reduction is around 8%; which for vehicle’s that cover 160,000 kilometres per year, is a significant reduction and impact on the environment.

Have the drivers of the vehicles noticed any improvements  to how the vehicle’s run?

There shouldn’t really be any noticeable difference in the way the vehicles perform although drivers have reported that the converted vehicles have a much smoother power delivery.

What are the Transport department’s goals for 2014?

Aside from ensuring we operate the most efficient transport network to service both DSA & E2E we also have to deliver a number of key projects in 2014; these range from implementing a number of transport IT solutions to renewing elements of our fleet.

Thanks Dean. It’s great to see the success that this conversion is having, not only to our transport department, but also on the environment.
