CarbonNeutral Overview

As a world leader in sustainability, TNT Post has developed the first carbon neutral initiative for addressed mail in conjunction with The CarbonNeutral Company, creating benefits for both our customers and the environment.

The service is made up of four elements – carbon evaluation, carbon reduction, offset and the use of a CarbonNeutral indicia, or logo, that signifies a mailing is carbon neutral.

Our 4 step process makes it easy for you to send CarbonNeutral mailings.

Step 1

Carbon Evaluation
The first stage is to calculate the emissions from your mailing. This involves the use of a specially designed carbon calculator developed for your use by the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management and The CarbonNeutral Company. By simply inputting your data the calculator works out the total carbon tonnage of your mailing activity. This includes:

  • Paper
  • Packaging and fulfilment
  • Data cleansing and capturing of undeliverables
  • Mailing house emissions
  • Transport and final delivery

Step 2

Carbon Reduction
Next, we advise you in ways to reduce emissions to a minimum with our recommended suppliers in data cleansing, data capturing and recycled paper, and offer an environmental consultant for further advice.

Step 3

Offset
Then, any remaining emissions are reduced to net zero through your contribution to a number of recognised carbon saving schemes, managed and reserved for TNT Post customers by The CarbonNeutral Company which shows the carbon tonnage you have offset. The good thing is our schemes include renewable energy and resource conservation projects which make an impact straight away. Please see the electronic support section for the offset projects reserved for TNT Post customers.

Step 4

Accreditation
Once the emissions of a mailing have been offset, the mailing items can carry our CarbonNeutral indicia, or logo. This signifies that the mailing is carbon neutral and demonstrates environmental commitment to your customers. We also provide you with a certificate authenticated by The CarbonNeutral Company which shows the carbon tonnage you have offset.

FAQ's

What is a CarbonNeutral Mailing logo?
The logo provided by TNT Post is a way of communicating that you have offset the emissions associated with your mailing activity. It is a way for you to inform the recipient that the entire mailing process for that item has been offset and the negative environmental effect has been compensated for.

What does offsetting mean?
When you ‘offset’, you are buying carbon credits to replace CO2 intensive processes with more climate friendly practices. Therefore, the CO2 produced throughout your mailing activity is counter-balanced by the CO2 saved by a project.

What else is TNT Post doing to help the environment?
Please see the Social Responsibility section which gives information on our CSR objectives and what we have accomplished so far

How can you be sure that the offset projects will result in greenhouse gas reductions?
The CarbonNeutral Company is independently audited throughout the end to end chain of carbon custody. They also guarantee every tonne of carbon so that if a project fails, they will make up the shortfall in carbon credits.

My company is already carbon neutral so can I use the TNT Post CarbonNeutral Mailing logo straight away?
TNT Post are committed to helping you to reduce the carbon impact of your mailing activity so if your company as a whole is carbon neutral this does not necessarily mean the mailing emissions will have been included in that calculation. If you use an internal mailing house then their emissions will have been taken into account and will therefore be excluded from the calculation, but the lifecycle emissions of the paper used throughout your mailings will still need to be accounted for so you will still need to undertake the calculation.
